Elizabeth Curnow, daughter of C. J Le Cren, Timaru, was the first wife of the poet Allen Curnow, also from Timaru. The artist made an earlier portrait of the sitter flanked by antirrhinums in 1940. Betty Curnow lent this painting to the Auckland City Art Gallery from February 1954 and it was purchased in 1970.
